Key Skills to Develop Novice Basketball Players Under 12 (U12)

At the novice level, basketball players under 12 should focus on developing fundamental skills that form the foundation of their game. These skills include ball-handling, passing, shooting, footwork, and defense. Here are key areas to focus on, along with specific drills to help players improve.

1. Ball-Handling Drills

Ball-handling is essential for every basketball player, regardless of position. Players need to control the ball under pressure and move confidently with it.

Stationary Dribbling

Players stand in place and dribble the ball in various ways. (With their dominant hand, non-dominant hand, low dribbles, and high dribbles).

Cone Weaving

Set up a line of cones. Players dribble through the cones, alternating hands as they move between each one.

2. Passing Drills

Accurate passing is critical to effective team play. Novice players should focus on mastering basic types of passes like the chest pass, bounce pass, and overhead pass.

Partner Passing

Pair players up and have them stand about 2-3 metres apart. They pass the basketball back and forth using chest and bounce passes, aiming for the ball to land in their partner’s chest or raised hands.

3-Person Weave

Three players run down the court in a weave pattern, passing the ball while moving. See the below video.

3. Shooting Drills

Developing proper shooting mechanics early is crucial for long-term success. Focus on teaching correct form, balance, and follow-through.

Form Shooting

Players stand close to the basket and focus on shooting with perfect form: feet balanced, elbow in, and following through and snap with the wrist.

Spot Shooting

Place markers at five different spots around the key. Players take a shot from each spot and rotate.

4. Footwork Drills

Good footwork allows players to maintain balance, move quickly, and improve both offensive and defensive play.

Jump Stops & Pivots

Players dribble, then come to a controlled stop with both feet landing simultaneously (jump stop). They then pivot on one foot before passing or shooting.

Defensive Slides

Players assume a low defensive stance and slide laterally across the court without crossing their feet.

5. Defense Drills

Teaching basic man-to-man defense early is vital for building strong defensive instincts.

Mirror It

Pair players with one player as the offensive player and moves side to side or forward and backward, while the defender mirrors their movements without reaching for the ball. The trick is to keep up with the ball handler.

Conclusion

Focusing on the fundamental skills of ball-handling, passing, shooting, footwork, and defense will help young basketball players can build a strong foundation. Each of these drills serves a specific purpose, helping them to develop essential abilities that will benefit them as they advance in the sport.
